Wankhede Stadium, mumbai: Pitch Report And Stats

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: Mumbai, the traditional cricket capital of India, has been home to Test matches at three distinct venues. The historic journey began with the Bombay Gymkhana ground, which hosted India’s first-ever Test in 1933-34 against England. Following World War II, the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium became the setting for 17 Tests. However, due to a dispute between the Cricket Club of India (owners of the Brabourne Stadium) and the Bombay Cricket Association, the latter constructed the 45,000-capacity Wankhede Stadium, situated just a mile away.

Wankhede Stadium made its Test debut during the 1974-75 season when West Indies toured India. In this match, Clive Lloyd played an unbeaten innings of 242, and it marked Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi’s final appearance as India lost to the West Indies by 201 runs. Notably, this Test witnessed a crowd disturbance when a fan rushed onto the ground to greet Lloyd and was handled roughly by the police.

India’s first victory at this venue was secured against New Zealand two seasons later. Wankhede Stadium has witnessed some remarkable performances, including Sunil Gavaskar’s iconic 205 against the West Indies and Alvin Kallicharan’s memorable 187 in the same 1978-79 series. It was also the site of Ian Botham’s all-round heroics, where he scored a century and claimed 13 wickets in the Jubilee Test of 1980, leading England to a 10-wicket victory.

The highest individual score by an Indian at Wankhede remains Vinod Kambli’s brilliant 224 against England in 1992-93, which occurred in only his third Test. Additionally, the ground holds the distinction of witnessing Ravi Shastri’s extraordinary feat of hitting six sixes in an over off Baroda’s Tilak Raj en route to recording the fastest double-hundred in first-class cricket at that time, which took place in 1984-85.

Due to its seaside location, swing bowlers often found assistance, especially during the early part of each day and in the final session when the sea breeze set in. However, the effects of this changed somewhat after the stands were rebuilt ahead of the 2011 World Cup. The pitch at Wankhede has traditionally been known for producing high-scoring matches, but the red soil in the region ensures that spinners receive some assistance during the later stages of a five-day game.

In the 2005 Test against Australia, the ball spun significantly from an early stage, combined with low bounce, leading to India’s victory in under three days despite losing almost an entire day to rain. The stands at Wankhede Stadium bear the names of legendary Mumbai cricketers, including Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar.
